Common Electrical Problems & Solutions

Here are a few tips for troubleshooting common electrical issues. However, please remember: If in doubt, always call a professional! Electrical work can be dangerous.

Power Out in Kitchen or Bathroom?

This is often related to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. These outlets are designed to protect you from electrical shock in wet areas.

  • Solution 1: Look for a GFCI outlet (it will have "Test" and "Reset" buttons). Press the "Reset" button firmly. Sometimes one GFCI outlet protects others downstream in the same circuit.
  • Solution 2: Check your circuit breaker panel. A breaker may have tripped.

Tripped Breaker?

Circuit breakers trip to prevent overloaded or short circuits, protecting your wiring from damage and fire.

  • Solution: Before calling an electrician, try to very firmly turn the breaker all the way OFF and then back ON. If you notice that the switch has some wiggle, it may mean it has not been firmly reset. Some breakers do have a small amount of natural wiggle, but a firm reset is key.
  • Caution: If a breaker trips repeatedly, it indicates an underlying problem. Do not keep resetting it. Call a professional electrician to diagnose the issue.

Power Out in Half or Whole House?

  • First Step: We suggest you call your utility company (e.g., PG&E in Humboldt County) first. It may be a utility issue they are already aware of or can handle. They can also tell you if the problem is on their side or yours.
  • If it's not the utility company: This could indicate a more serious issue with your main breaker or service line. In this case, call Brant Electric for professional assistance.
